Description
One sunny day in Hawaii... (Ha! That narrows it down for you, doesn't it? ) my husband and I ventured out into the waves on the north end of Hapuna beach on the Big Island of Hawaii. We were armed with snorkels and a hope to encounter some colorful fish. Turns out we got to experience WAY more! After ooooing and ahhhhing over the pretty fish and funky shaped corals for a few minutes, we found ourselves at the end of an underwater lava outcropping where the water got deep and dark. We stayed close to the reef enjoying the sea-life when a shadow moved in from the deep below us. It was slow and graceful, barely distinguishable at first due to the distance between us. I thought I was seeing things. This enormous creature glided in effortlessly growing in size as it approached. I couldn't believe my eyes! Greg, my husband, was in awe too. I was surprised at my lack of fear or anxiety as it approached. I knew logically I had nothing to fear as these rays eat tiny creatures, but being a weak swimmer and far from shore I would think this sort of thing would set me on edge. Instead, I was at ease, giddy, and drinking in the silent experience, knowing it would make it to my easel to relive forever.

What a beautifully rendered scene. I wish I could see the original. From memory or underwater photo?
