Description
The coffee maker hums to life and a stream of precious morning fuel fills an old mug. Black, this is the only way I drink my coffee so early in the day. I shuffle into the studio, absorbing the intense heat from the ceramic into my hand. I can feel the warmth travel through my body just as the caffeine begins to hit my bloodstream. Still not ready. I scan the room while I sip my hot beverage, a pile of receipts, a stack of invoices, an assortment of studies leaning against the wall. Some commissions, some unfinished paintings, they gather around impatiently. They are not why I'm here. The easel stands proudly in the corner showcasing my current obsession. It's such a prominent position that commands attention from the moment one enters the room. This new work is constantly on my mind. The painting has managed to capture my attention longer than most. I keep gravitating towards it, pushing deeper than I thought I would go. As I stand in front of the easel
I begin to critique and measure it's elements. I study every value shift, analyze every line. I begin to paint and correct in my mind as the mug begins to cool. Before long the mug is empty and my mind is beginning to focus. I reach for my paintbrush.
It's a routine repeated every morning as I strive to complete this painting. For those who follow me on instagram or Facebook, you may have seen my recent post about the previously white background on this painting. For those who haven't, I was unsure what to do with the background. Sure, several things would "work" but I wanted something special something that resonated with my vision for the painting. Over the last few weeks of painting Lily's face I decided not to worry about the background and really focus on her. Then last week I had a dream. In it I was watching over my own shoulder as I worked on this painting of Lily. Only, now in my dream I was working on the background. I remember being so excited to finally have an answer to this background dilemma. Then as I peered closer, I saw what exactly I was painting. It was depicting an old plaster or stone-like wall with dramatic spot lighting from above. And on the wall I was writing (in Greek) Romans 12:2.
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is, his good, pleasing and perfect will."
Why is this a big deal?
I had decided early on that the title of this painting would be "Transformation" with the subject representing some moment of transition between what was and what is becoming. That point in time where we are aware of a shift and are choosing to pursue the best to come including the hurdles that may come with it, rather than shy away from the unknown, or maybe cling to the comfort of things that are old and familiar. So watching myself in a dream, paint this verse that embodies what I was striving for was pretty darn awesome. I remember being excited even in my dream, and waking up with a silly grin on my face. I couldn't go back to sleep. 😊 The next day went to work researching ancient Biblical texts online that contained this same passage in it's original form, the older the better. With the help of a friend who could read Greek I was able to pinpoint the verse in an old codex from a few hundred A.D.
So here we are, I am working into the night, painting the characters from a 1500+ year old Greek codex containing Romans 12:2, just like I saw it in my dream.
😊
It makes me pretty giddy!
