Featuring the State Bird of Hawaii, the Nene, this painting catches a pair resting along a volcanic rock ledge. With Ohelo bushes all around they are content to enjoy the morning light as it peeks over the lava outcropping. Sunlight illuminates them and the vegetation. This is "First Light".
This is one of 10 paintings by Karen Whitworth created for "Birds of Paradise", an exhibition at the East Hawaii Cultural Center in Hilo, Hawaii. In February of 2011, her 10 paintings were on display depicting colorful flora and feathered fauna of Hawaii. From the native species to the tropical favorites, "Birds of Paradise" was an artistic celebration of the delicate flowers and beautiful birds found in the island state of Hawaii.
